One of the best reasons to eat Hotdog!

Why Chicken Afritada is the Comfort Dish You’ll Always Come Back To!

The skies opened up this week — the kind of rain that drapes everything in stillness. And what better way to fill that silence than with a simmering pot of Chicken Afritada?

This Filipino classic is one of the most beloved tomato-based stews — tender chicken thighs braised in a rich, savory-sweet tomato sauce, with chunky potatoes, bell peppers, carrots, and the nostalgic pop of red hotdogs. Oh, and we had a special kitchen cameo from Cole, our four-legged sous chef, who made sure everything passed the sniff test. 🐾

If you’ve never tried Afritada before, this is your moment. And if you have, well — this is your invitation to fall in love with it all over again.

🥕 Why Chicken Afritada is More Than Just Delicious

Beyond its warm, hearty flavor, Chicken Afritada brings real nutritional value to the table:

  • Protein-rich: Bone-in chicken provides high-quality protein and essential amino acids.
  • Loaded with veggies: Potatoes, carrots, and bell peppers deliver fiber, vitamins A and C, and antioxidants.
  • Tomato goodness: Lycopene from the tomato sauce is known for heart and skin health.
  • Light but satisfying: Unlike oil-heavy stews, Afritada is simmered — not fried — making it comforting without being too heavy.

This dish hits that rare balance of nourishing and indulgent, especially perfect for cozy weather or sharing with loved ones.

🌭 But Wait… What’s With the Hotdogs?

Yes. The hotdogs. That bright red, childhood-defining mystery meat that somehow always finds its way into Filipino spaghetti… and Chicken Afritada.

But why?

  • Nostalgia: It’s a nod to the Filipino tendency to infuse joy and playfulness into our cuisine.
  • Texture & flavor: The slight snap and sweetness of red hotdogs contrast the savory sauce beautifully.
  • Budget stretch: In many homes, hotdogs help bulk up the dish affordably.

Is it optional? Sure.
Is it authentic? 100% yes.

And once you try it this way… you might never go back.

🥣 The Story Behind Chicken Afritada

Afritada gets its name from the Spanish word fritada, meaning “fried.” This comes from the traditional Filipino cooking technique of pan-frying meat before simmering it in sauce.

Unlike Kaldereta (which is richer and uses liver spread) or Menudo (with smaller meat cuts and raisins), Afritada is:

  • Simpler and definitely Healthier
  • Lighter in flavor and very Kid Friendly
  • And more vegetable-forward and Nutritious

It was born during Spanish colonization but evolved through generations of Filipino home cooking. From fiesta tables to weeknight dinners, it’s a staple of emotional and culinary heritage.

💡 Why This is The Dish To Cook Right Now

  • It’s budget-friendly — stretches meat with hearty veg.
  • It stores well — even better the next day.
  • The balance of tangy-sweet tomato and savory chicken is addictively comforting.
  • And frankly… when it’s raining, few things match a hot plate of Chicken Afritada.

Whether you’re feeding a family, healing a heartbreak, or just vibing with the weather, this dish won’t let you down.

And if you’re lucky, maybe your own version of Cole the Dog featured, will join you in the kitchen.
